Fish kill would sadden V. Rogers
One of my favorite local activities is to take a leisurely walk on the path around Newport Lake in Mill Creek Park. On July 5, I was saddened and sickened by the sight of many dead fish floating on the water. According to a local worker at the local sewage plant, the fish kill is due to the large amount of rain this area has received. Legend has it that Volney Rogers, the founder of the Park, cried in court when he lost the battle to keep sewage pipes and runoff out of his beloved park.
I am sure he would be upset to put it mildly if he saw today’s fish kill.
I’m not sure what solution needs to be put in place, but I do know that heavy rains are going to occur in the future, which likely means more fish kills in Mill Creek. A solution must be found and put in place to stop it from happening again and again. This community needs to respect the vision of Atty. Volney Rogers and let him rest in peace.
