Ursuline’s Davidson hired at Radford

RADFORD, Va.

Ursuline High graduate Courtney Davidson was hired as an assistant women’s basketball coach at Radford University.

Davidson, who played collegiately at Michigan State will coordinate community service and camps for the women’s basketball program, while overseeing the point guards.

In addition, Davidson will assist in recruiting, scouting and academics.

Davidson was the director of women’s basketball operations at the College of Charleston for the 2014-15 season and at Youngstown State for the 2013-14 season.

She also spent two years as Ursuline’s girls basketball coach and was an assistant with the Irish from 2008-11.

Torre, Hirschbeck dinner is Sunday

The Magic of Michael Foundation’s first fund-raiser will be Sunday and Monday when Hall of Fame manager Joe Torre will be in Poland. The foundation honors the memory of Michael Hirschbeck, son of major league umpire John and Denise Hirschbeck.

The event begins with Sunday’s 18-hole golf scramble at The Lake Club for sponsors of the event.

Sunday evening, Torre and Cleveland Indians broadcaster Tom Hamilton will participate in a fireside chat at a dinner/auction. Tickets cost $150.

Monday’s event is an 18-hole golf scramble at 10 a.m. Tickets for the scramble cost $150 and include food, prizes, and beverages. For tickets, call Megan Hirschbeck at 330-531-2700.

Proceeds will go to the Magic of Michael Foundation and assist families from our community and surrounding areas in Northeastern Ohio.

Keating qualifies for junior nationals

R.J. Keating, an 8-year-old diver from Boardman, will compete in the 5-meter platform competition at the USA Diving Junior National Championships from Aug. 1-9 in Orlando, Fla.

Keating, a first-time qualifier, competes for American Flyers Diving in Solon.

He qualified based on his performance at the USA Region 5 Championships and USA Zone C Championships in June at Indiana University.

He competed against teams from Ohio, Pennsylvania, New York, Indiana, Michigan, Kentucky, Massachusetts and Virginia.

Poland’s Gabriel earns SEC honors

BIRMINGHAM, Ala.

Poland High School graduate Erin Gabriel was among the 11 University of Tennessee softball players who earned SEC Academic Honors for the 2014-15 academic year.

Gabriel, a junior, is one of the Volunteers’ pitchers.

“We are committed to preparing Tennessee softball student-athletes for a lifetime of professional opportunities,” Tennessee co-head coach Karen Weekly said. “Academic excellence is an integral part of that process.”

Canfield soccer players to attend World Cup

CANFIELD

Canfield soccer players Raquel Abel, Cheyenne Story and Anita Mancini will attend Sunday’s Women’s World Cup final between the USA and Japan in Vancouver.

The game is a rematch of the 2011 final, which Japan won 3-1 on a penalty shootout.

Lacrosse event set for July 25

YOUNGSTOWN

Mahoning Valley Lacrosse will sponsor “Laxtravanganza” on July 25 from 1:30-4:30 p.m. at Youngstown State University’s WATT Center.

The event is for novice and skilled players of all ages and gender.

Area high school players will participate as will Westminster College’s team and Gateway Lacrosse. Admission is free.
