On June 11, the Austintown library hosted Teen Titans Book Club as part of the Summer Discovery Program.

Librarian Jen Kuczek said she was excited for this specific book club — children got to read young adult books and discuss the heroes within them.

“The idea is some kids thought it was more superheroes but really every book has a hero,” Kuczek said.

Angela McKenna, one of the newest book club members, was excited for a summer of reading in the Summer Discovery Program offered by local libraries.

This is McKenna’s first book club and interested her because of the fiction and superhero theme of the summer.

“Book clubs are really fun they think about things you never thought about in a book,” Kuczek said.

McKenna said her favorite author, someone who she wanted to read for Teen Titans Book Club was Rick Riorden.

“He writes about mythological creatures,” McKenna said. “I think he’s hilarious and interesting.”

Kuczek left the book club literature choices up to the students, sparking McKenna’s interest in reading at least one of the books of her favorite author — despite the fact that she has already read 13 of the books by Riorden.

McKenna said many of her friends didn’t have much interest in reading, but she likes it regardless.

“There’s a whole bunch of people that say reading is like going into another world,” McKenna said.

Kuczek offered email correspondence until their next monthly meeting, July 9, to discuss the book for discussion and ideas for another.
