The Austintown library hosted Emoji Coasters on June 10, a craft event that involved making emoticon-designed drink coasters. The event was put together by librarian Ashley Potopovich.

Potopovich said she found this craft on Pinterest and thought it would be fun because of how familiar most children are with the famous emoticons.

“They’re really popular right now with everyone,” Potopovich said.

Potopovich provided many print-outs of Emojis for examples to go off of, stencils to help formulate coasters resembling the pictures and paint to create their works of art. Like Potopovich, many librarians at the Austintown library strive to come up with different crafts for children throughout the year — trying not to repeat any — to teach them not only different ways to be creative, but also to have fun while doing it.

“It’s just something different, something to do,” Potopovich said.

Throughout the class, Potopovich asked students what their fun summer plans were, adding conversation to their very focused work.

Bryce Crofford and his sister, Kayelin Crofford, came to the class with their grandmother before going bowling that Wednesday afternoon. Bryce Crofford said he was excited to paint and make coasters.

“This is a lot of fun,” Bryce Crofford said.
