Bees swarm from truck crash near Idaho-Wash. border
COEUR D’ALENE, Idaho
Authorities say bees are swarming near the Washington-Idaho border after a tractor-trailer full of the buzzing insects tipped over, spilling its load earlier this week.
One eastbound lane of Interstate 90 was closed by the accident near Coeur d’Alene.
The Spokesman-Review reports the Idaho State Police were advising people to stay clear of the area, which was near the marathon course of the Ironman Coeur d’Alene triathlon.
A similar truck wreck just two days before released more than 20 million bees on State Highway 33 in the eastern Idaho desert. Those bees were being shipped to North Dakota to pollinate crops and make honey.
Court rails against judge who didn’t show up for jury duty
WICHITA, Kan.
A federal judge won’t punish a Kansas judge who didn’t show up for jury duty in federal court.
Sedgwick County District Judge Michael Hoelscher failed to appear for jury duty June 15.
U.S. District Judge Eric Melgren wrote in an order Friday that he believes judges and other public officials should comply with laws with which they expect others to comply. He noted federal judges in Kansas have shown up for jury service in state courts.
But Melgren withdrew his earlier order requiring Hoelscher to show cause for not appearing.
The turnabout came after Hoelscher’s attorney argued that sitting state judges are barred by U.S. law from serving on federal juries. An email with the court filing also documented Hoelscher’s efforts to comply with directions from the court’s automated system.
Beekeepers set out to remove a million bees from NY home
WALLKILL, N.Y.
Beekeepers have quite the task ahead of them as they remove an estimated 1 million honey bees that have taken up residence at a New York home.
The Times Herald-Record of Middletown reports two beekeepers were at work Thursday removing siding on the outside of the Wallkill house to get to the bees.
The Orange County family living there discovered the bees while they were clearing trees. They were preparing to replace the siding, but couldn’t get to it because of the bees. One of the homeowners is allergic to the insects.
Marcel Witschard Jr. and Carl Witschard say it will take at least a week for them to remove the bees.
