Howland man arrested in theft, crash of SUV
HOWLAND
Howland police arrested Matthew Safos, 25, of Howland, who is accused of stealing and crashing a Ford Escape sport-utility vehicle Wednesday morning.
The stolen SUV turned up at about 9 a.m. when it crashed into the median of state Route 82 near Niles-Cortland Road, according to Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV.
Safos fled from the crash but was arrested a mile away on Howland Springs Road.
Charges of operating a vehicle under the influence, receiving stolen property and driving with a suspended license are being filed against Safos in Warren Municipal Court. Safos faces charges of burglary and auto theft filed by Beaver Township Police.
Sinkhole closes road in Weathersfield Twp.

Weathersfield Township police closed off Salt Springs Road between Niles Carver Road and Ohltown McDonald Road, where police saw a large sinkhole had opened along the side the road after some flooding had receded. Police will ssue a traffic citation for those who attempt to drive around the barricades, according to Vindicator broadcast partner 21 WFMJ-TV.
Kennedy Road closing

Mahoning County commissioners this week voted to close Kennedy Road between Quarry Road and the Lowellville village line from 6 p.m. to midnight July 15-18 and also from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 16 for the annual Mount Carmel celebration.
African-American Male Wellness Walk planned

The third annual 5-K African American Male Wellness Walk of the Mahoning Valley on Aug. 15 at the Covelli Centre downtown offers free health screenings, education and empowerment for the family. Numerous vendors will distribute information.

Our Kids Stay Well Walk Village will augment the Adult Walk. The children’s village is dedicated to promoting health and wellness. Staff from Akron’s Children Hospital, Youngstown City Health Department and NOW Youngstown have teamed up to create activities.
