Pa. racetrack to start races early to avoid deer

ERIE, Pa.

A Pennsylvania thoroughbred track will start its races more than two hours earlier and remove nearby bushes and trees to discourage deer from jumping onto the track.

Officials at Presque Isle Downs & Casino in Erie say races will resume Wednesday at 3:05 p.m. instead of the normal 5:25 p.m. post time. That’s to avoid racing at dusk when deer become more active.

A fence around the track will also be made taller. The track canceled racing Monday and Tuesday after a deer ran in front of horses during Sunday’s fourth race. Four later races were canceled that day.

Casino vice president and general manager Jeff Favre says no one wants a jockey or horse to get hurt by a deer. The track holds races Sunday through Thursday.

Sentence delayed for Toledo gambling probe

DETROIT

Lawyers for a Detroit-area gambler caught in a sports bribery scandal at the University of Toledo say it would be “unthinkable” to send the ailing 82-year-old man to prison.

Mitchell “Ed” Karam is the last of nine people to be sentenced. He was expected in Detroit federal court Tuesday, but the hearing was postponed. The ringleader, Ghazi Manni, recently was sentenced to nearly six years in federal prison.

The U.S. government says Karam was the “money man” who split the bribes with Manni. Seven Toledo basketball and football players got money and other perks to alter their play to affect games a decade ago.

Karam’s lawyers quote doctors as saying he’ll soon be bedridden because of his many health woes. The government says prison doctors can take care of him.

U.S. men off to poor start at Wimbledon

LONDON

Not a good start Tuesday for the American men.

No. 31 Jack Sock, seeded at a Grand Slam tournament for the first time, bowed out in the first round of Wimbledon, beaten 6-3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 by 69th-ranked Sam Groth of Australia.

And in another early match on Day 2 of the tournament, Tim Smyczek lost to No. 30 Fabio Fognini of Italy 6-4, 6-3, 6-2. U.S. men went 3-1 on Monday.

The seven men from the United States represent the country’s smallest group at the All England Club since there were five in 1947.
