Mahoning commissioners approve design pact for new dog pound
YOUNGSTOWN — The Mahoning County commissioners hired a Liberty Township firm to provide an estimated $250,000 worth of architectural and engineering services for the new county dog shelter.
This morning, they awarded the contract to Copich Architects for the new shelter, which will be established in a former fitness center at 1230 N. Meridian Road in Austintown.
After a bank foreclosure, the county acquired the 8,540-square-foot building on 6.67 acres for $250,000, plus a $25,000 auctioneer’s fee.
The commissioners last September approved the issuance and sale of bonds for up to $1,015,000 to renovate the building into a dog shelter.
The building, which is near access ramps to Interstates 80 and 680, the 711 connector and state Route 11, will replace the current county dog pound on Industrial Road on Youngstown’s West Side.
