Lordstown’s Cruze still sells above 20k after 5 years

LORDSTOWN

Although the Lordstown-built Chevrolet Cruze has some tough competition and is in its fifth sales year, the compact car continues to post monthly sales figures above 20,000.

In June, Cruze figures hit 22,647 — a 12.9 percent decrease from last year’s 26,008 sales.

“I think, given the environment, the number north of 20k for Cruze is still pretty decent,” said Alec Gutierrez, Kelley Blue Book senior analyst.

Overall, larger vehicle sales have continually outshined passenger cars for automakers.

But the Cruze’s sales beat the top-selling Chevrolet Equinox’s 21,760 sales in June.

“It is a testament to the popularity of the vehicle even in its last days,” said Glenn Johnson, head of the United Auto Workers Local 1112. “The car speaks for itself.”

The Cruze has been on the market since late 2010. It’s successor, a sleek, lighter, larger model, made its global debut on June 24 in Detroit.
