ODNR issues drilling permits

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources issued eight permits for horizontal drilling through the week of June 21-27.

None of the permits issued were in the Mahoning Valley. Six were issued in Harrison County, and two were issued in Carroll County.

Unfair trade

WASHINGTON

President Barack Obama signed into law trade legislation that includes the Leveling the Playing Field Act, a bill introduced by Democrat U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown of Cleveland in March and co-sponsored by Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman of Cincinnati that will give U.S. companies new tools to fight against unfair trade practices.

The senators said the law will restore strength to antidumping and countervailing duty statutes that allow businesses and workers in the U.S. to petition the Commerce Department and the International Trade Commission when foreign producers sell goods in the U.S. below market price or receive illegal subsidies.

FDA weighs new restrictions on liquid nicotine products

WASHINGTON

Federal health officials are considering whether to require new warnings and child-resistant packaging on liquid nicotine formulas used with e-cigarettes and other emerging tobacco products.

The Food and Drug Administration said Tuesday it is responding to an uptick in nicotine poisonings reported by emergency rooms and poison centers nationwide, many involving infants and children.

The agency said in an online posting it is considering whether “it would be appropriate for the protection of the public health to warn the public about the dangers or nicotine exposure” and “require that some tobacco products be sold in child-resistant packaging.”

Stocks edge higher

NEW YORK

The U.S. stock market stabilized Tuesday as investors followed the latest developments in the Greek debt saga.

Stocks edged higher a day after the market had its worst day of the year. That slump was prompted by a breakdown in talks between Greece and its creditors.
