CANFIELD

Judd Rubin moved to Canfield two years ago with his family and is now the principal at Canfield Village Middle School.

The Canfield Board of Education met Tuesday and his appointment was unanimous. He was awarded a three-year contract with a yearly salary of $79,000. He has 20 years’ experience and had been principal of W.S. Guy Middle School in the Liberty school district for the last four years.

“The community has really taken us in, and it felt real comfortable,” Rubin said. “I saw the opening and thought it was a great opportunity to be here with my children.”

Canfield schools Superintendent Alex Geordan said former CVMS Principal Mara Banfield left the district and is with the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center.

In other action, the school board unanimously approved Christine Davis as a sixth-grade science teacher. She had been with the district for a few years as a CVMS special-education tutor.

Douglas Dawson was unanimously approved to transfer from CMVS eighth-grade social studies teacher to special assignment. That means “right now he’s not assigned to a classroom” and until his court case is resolved, “he will not be assigned to youngsters,” Geordan said.

Dawson has been on paid administrative leave since last November. A Thanksgiving-night incident involved an argument between Dawson and his wife after one of their sons took a vehicle from their home, according to a police report.

His wife told police Dawson put her in a headlock and “flipped her upside-down and pinned her down,” the report said. Dawson also threw himself backward into an officer, driving that officer into a glass china cabinet.

Police officers then stunned Dawson and pinned him to the ground to take him into custody Thanksgiving night.

Dawson’s change-of-venue request will be decided during a motion hearing the same day a jury trial is to begin in Mahoning County Area Court here Sept. 15. He also has a Sept. 4 pre-trial hearing.
