A hearing will take place for a woman jailed on attempted-murder charges who is seeking a lower bond.
A pretrial hearing took place in Mahoning County Common Pleas Court on Tuesday for Evegenia Hull, 33, who along with her husband, Thomas Hull, 59, are charged with attempted murder in the shooting of a man at Elm Street and Madison Avenue on May 13.
Police said the Hulls were inside a van that was chasing an SUV that the victim was driving. When the SUV stopped, police said Evegenia Hull jumped out of the van and fired several shots into the SUV before jumping back into the van, which drove away.
The Hulls fled to Pittsburgh, where they were arrested by U.S. Marshals two days later. They returned to Youngstown after an extradition hearing June 19 and were arraigned in municipal court June 22, where Judge Elizabeth Kobly set bond for each at $500,000, which was continued when she was arraigned in common pleas court June 23.
Evegenia Hull’s attorney, Paul Conn, filed a motion Monday asking that her bond be lowered. He said in his motion that her bond was set at a high amount she cannot post, and she also has been determined indigent. Conn’s motion said that because she has such a high bond, the court already has denied her the presumption of innocence which the constitution says she is entitled to until she is proved guilty.
At her municipal court arraignment, city prosecutors said they were concerned about Evegenia Hull because she is a native of Russia and she already has fled the jurisdiction once.
Judge Sweeney set a hearing for July 7 to determine her bond status.
