The Youngstown City School District, in cooperation with Eastern Gateway Community College and Youngstown State University, is selecting the 2015-16 Youngstown Early College freshman class.

Students who scored 400 or higher in reading on the Ohio Achievement Assessment have been invited to attend an enrollment meeting with a parent or guardian at 6 p.m. Tuesday or Wednesday at Choffin Career and Technical Center, 200 E. Wood St.

At no cost to the family, Youngstown Early College students can earn both a high school diploma and an associate degree or a minimum of 30 hours of college credit toward a bachelor’s degree. About 215 students are enrolled this school year.

Lily Pond now open for skating

YOUNGSTOWN

Visitors to the Mill Creek MetroParks can now ice skate at the Lily Pond.

The park will host supervised ice skating at the Lily Pond today and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

If conditions allow, skating will continue Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through Feb. 22.

Unsupervised skating is permitted during normal MetroParks hours. Benches and a fire pit will be provided.

No skate rental is available.

New citizens

YOUNGSTOWN

Six people became U.S. citizens in a Thursday naturalization ceremony before Judge Robert N. Rusu of Mahoning County Probate Court.

The new citizens, their hometowns and countries of origin are: Marysol Martinez Munoz, Youngstown, Colombia; Gregory Frederick Mitchell, Boardman, Trinidad and Tobago; Virgil Ciprian Gilea, Canfield, Romania; Emiko Kobori, Poland, Ohio, Japan; Paulette Lorraine Brown, Youngstown, Jamaica; Eduardo Bustillos, Austintown, Mexico.

Diabetes education

YOUNGSTOWN

Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, is offering three-day diabetes-education workshops at St. Elizabeth Youngstown and St. Joseph Warren hospitals Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.

The course is from 9 to 11:30 a.m. each day in the diabetes classroom at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, Belmont Avenue, and from 6 to 8:30 p.m. each day in Classroom No. 1 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, Eastland Avenue.

The classes will be repeated Feb. 17, 18 and 19 at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital and at Hospice House in Boardman.

“These classes provide participants with the knowledge they need to manage their diabetes and avoid the long-term complications the disease can cause,” says Kay Leonhart, manager, diabetes education, Mercy Health Youngstown.

Black history presentation set

WARREN

The Warren Heritage Center will present the “Black History of the City of Warren” at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 16 and 17 at the Kinsman House, 303 Mahoning Ave. NW.

Speakers will include Warren Councilwoman Helen Rucker, Mayor Doug Franklin and historian Wendell Louth of Bristolville.

There is no admission charge, but seating is limited.
