Police release details in students’ likely murder-suicide

PITTSBURGH (AP) — A Carnegie Mellon University graduate student was shot several times in the head and chest before police say her boyfriend shot himself in the head in the off-campus apartment they shared.

The 26-year-old Ph.D. student was Chalalai Chaihirunkarn (sha-lah-LAY’ SHY’-run-karn) and studied computer science. The man was 29-year-old Bryan Springer, who graduated in 2007 and worked at CMU’s Software Engineering Institute.

Police found their bodies about 1:45 p.m. Thursday after a friend asked them to check on the woman’s welfare.

Pittsburgh police Cmdr. RaShall Brackney says friends told police the couple’s relationship was troubled, but there were no signs of a struggle.

Police and the medical examiner were trying to determine when the shooting occurred, as friends hadn’t seen the woman for days.
