For more than a year, the Boardman library has been hosting an event called It’s All About Yarn, which gives area residents a chance to meet and give each other tips on the various needle work projects they’re working on.

“We started it here in an effort to have more adult programs,” Boardman library assistant supervisor of children’s works Karen Saunders said. “Since it’s something I have knowledge of, I like to do crafts, it’s something I can do in a monthly program.

“The libraries pretty much showcase programs patrons are interested in and expertise the staff members have.”

The meetings are put on once a month for an hour each time.

“We always have a show and tell; everyone always shows what they’re working on,” Saunders said. “We have a book display of the books that we have in that subject and people might be interested in.

“We have a wide base of knowledge with the members of the group. They each have a specialty that they do; they may be more interested in knitting than crocheting or cross stitch.”

Amanda Hall of Austintown attended the most recent meeting on Dec. 15.

For the past couple months, she had been stitching squares that would be attached together to create an afghan. Hall said she had 23 squares completed and needed 30 to 36 in all to make the afghan big enough for her and her husband’s king-sized bed.

The original idea was to have the afghan done in time for her wedding anniversary [which was Dec. 15], but it would be done in time for Christmas.

Hall said on average she can complete one square per day, sometimes two if the pattern isn’t too difficult.

The meetings for It’s All About Yarn had been in the evenings at 7, but were changed to the mornings in October due to daylight savings time.

The meetings each average six people, but Saunders said attendance has gone down slightly since the time change.

“We’re starting to build up our numbers,” she said. “I think we’ll get more as it goes along. It was difficult driving at night for some of the members, that’s why we switched it to a daytime session.”
