The Austintown library hosted a new event on Jan. 5, an hour-long Read-A-Long event for tweens and teens in grades 4-12.

“The Boardman library did something similar a couple times and it was a great success, so we thought we’d try something similar here,” said Austintown library assistant supervisor Starr Jones, who supervised the program.

Jones pulled a variety of books from the library’s teens and children’s sections that the children could read aloud in subjects such as horror and ghost stories, sports stories and poetry. They also had the option of pulling books of their own to read. Among the books available were “Best Shorts,” “The August House Book of Scary Stories,” “The Random House Book of Sports Stories,” “Geektastic Stories from the Nerd World,” and “Motion: American Sports Poems.”

Jones also provided Twizzlers, swiss rolls, mini bags of chips, mini candy bars and Pepsi for the children to snack on.

In addition, any child who stayed and read for the whole hour received a teen library draw-string bag.

Jones said tweens and teens who participated would have a good time reading and socializing.

“Any time spent reading is good,” she said. “Finding some interesting things, short stories and poetry is good. They’ll have some time to hang out, read some books.”
