Ohio state officeholders: We oppose legalization of marijuana
COLUMBUS — Four statewide officeholders aren’t backing a proposal to legalize marijuana production and use in the state.
They aren’t mincing words on the issue, either.
“It’s a stupid idea,” said Republican Attorney General Mike DeWine.
“Frankly, I don’t know if I’ve ever seen a worse idea than this one,” said Republican Secretary of State Jon Husted.
“What are we going to have next, 12 monopolies for whorehouses in the 12 largest counties? It’s outrageous,” said Republican state Auditor Dave Yost.
The three and Republican state Treasurer Josh Mandel offered comments on the issue during a panel discussion at a legislative preview session today organized by the Associated Press in Columbus.
Mandel said he has heard repeatedly from employers that they are having a difficult time finding trained workers who can pass drug tests.
“That’s already a problem,” he said. “I think passing this as a constitutional amendment will only make the problem worse.”
