Wrestling teams set for state dual tournament

The state dual wrestling tournament is scheduled to start today. In Division I Region 4, Austintown Fitch will take on Green and Boardman will face Copley at Copley high school.

In Division II Region 11, Howland will face Harvey and Jefferson will take on Ravenna at Ravenna. At Perry high school, Hubbard faces West Geauga. At Region 12, Canfield will be at home against Indian Creek and West Branch faces Beaver at Carrollton high school.

In Division III, Region 19 Jackson-Milton wrestles Mogadore and South Range takes on Warrensville Heights at Manchester. Girard takes on the winner of Grand Valley-Berekshire at Girard.

All matches begin at 5 p.m.

Gordon to face one-year suspension

According to ESPN.com, Josh Gordon failed another drug test and is facing a one-year suspension.

He tested positive for alcohol, which he was not allowed because of a driving while impaired arrest back in July 2014.

Gordon has been previously suspended twice for violating the NFL’s susbstance-abuse policy.

Italiano makes all-academic team

Ten Kent State football players were named to the 2014 Academic All-Mid-American Conference Team.

Jordan Italiano (Canfield), Matt Dellinger and Nate Vance all became two-time Academic All-MAC selections.

They were joined by Chad Bushley (Berea, Ohio), Nick Cuthbert (Chesterland, Ohio), Nate Holley (Toledo, Ohio), Nick Holley(Toledo, Ohio), Chris Humphrey (Solon, Ohio) and Casey Pierce (Parma, Ohio), and Anthony Meray (Spanaway, Wash.).

Three Kent State safeties made the list, including Italiano and Cuthbert, who each carry over a 3.9 GPA. Last month, Italiano was named to the Academic All-America First team.

State tournament tickets go on sale Friday

Ticket sales begin Friday, for the upcoming Ohio High School Athletic Association state tournaments in basketball and individual wrestling, which will be held in March at the Schottenstein Center at The Ohio State University. The public sale begins at 10 a.m. Friday through Ticketmaster or at the Schottenstein Center ticket office.

The 78th annual OHSAA state wrestling individual tournament is March 12-14, the 40th annual girls basketball state tournament is March 19-21 and the 93rd annual boys basketball state tournament is March 26-28. Tickets are already on sale for the third annual OHSAA state wrestling dual team tournament Feb. 14 at St. John Arena.

Track and field meeting on Feb. 4

The Greater Youngstown Track Officials Association and Austintown Fitch athletics will host a mandatory Track & Field state rules meeting on Feb. 4 at 6p.m in the Fitch Auditorium. All coaches and officials must attend a state rules meeting every year. The OHSAA will have a limited number of starter shells available for $25, limit 5 per person.

NightHawks to hold tryout night Thursday

The Youngstown NightHawks will have a tryout and meet the team night on Thursday at Farmer Jim’s indoor soccer complex in Cortland. The event starts at 6 p.m and will run until 9. People will have a chance to meet the players, get autographs and buy tickets for future events.

Orioles acquire Snider in trade with Pirates

The Baltimore Orioles have acquired outfielder Travis Snider from the Pittsburgh Pirates for a minor league pitcher and a player to be named.

The teams announced the trade Tuesday night. The Pirates got left-hander Stephen Tarpley.

The 26-year-old Snider hit .264 with 13 home runs and a career-best 38 RBIs in 140 games for the Pirates last season. He was a first-round draft pick by Toronto in 2006.
