The Knox Family Scholarship began in 2008 at Eastern Gateway Community College during the college’s 40th anniversary when Assistant Professor Ken Knox and his wife, Pam, contributed $1,000 for scholarships.

The annual Knox Family Scholarship continues.

“Each of our five children has been the beneficiary of private scholarships as they completed their undergraduate work,” Knox said, listing his children and their higher-education institutions: Kenny, Malone University; Matthew, U.S. Military Academy; Kevin, Ohio State University; and Melanie and Molly, both Ohio University.

“We wanted to create a lasting award to recognize our children’s efforts and to encourage current Eastern Gateway students to continue their educational pursuits,” he said. “This scholarship allows us to accomplish both of these goals.”

Knox said the family began the scholarship donations when they contributed two $500 scholarships to the Eastern Gateway 40th Anniversary Scholarship initiative.

“Seeing the benefit to the many students, we decided to create an ongoing award with which two students annually will receive a $500 scholarship,” he said. “Since Pam and I were in business for many years, we decided the recipients will be business-management majors.”

As a faculty member who teaches at both the main campus in Steubenville and the Valley Center in Youngstown, Knox said he is “particularly impressed by those students who balance a home life with schoolwork and in many cases, employment. It is our desire to encourage those students to complete their programs and to graduate from the college.”
