Fire damages home vacant for one day

A fire that damaged a house at 524 Miller Ave. on Sunday morning is still under investigation.

The Youngstown Fire Department said the fire began around 2:10 a.m. in the living room and traveled up the walls to the attic. There is no damage estimate available.

No one was injured.

The house had been vacant for a day. The owner had just died, the department reported.

Tax workshop set at Jewish center

Lecture on fracking, quakes opens series

The Youngstown State University Speaker Series on Energy and the Environment continues this semester. The lectures, started last fall and organized by Ray Beiersdorfer, YSU professor of Geological and Environmental Sciences, are scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesdays starting this week and running through April 22. The lectures are in Room B112 of Cushwa Hall on the YSU campus. They are free and open to the public.

“The Science of Shale Gas: Fracking Induced Seismic Events in Eastern Ohio” will be the topic of this Wednesday’s lecture by Beiersdorfer. He will report on the more than 1,000, human-triggered earthquakes recorded in eastern Ohio as a result of shale- gas development.

Dana Chamber sets Stambaugh concert

The Dana School of Music at Youngstown State University announces a concert by the Dana Chamber Orchestra 4 p.m. Sunday in Stambaugh Auditorium, 1000 Fifth Avenue.

The concert will feature classical favorites by Mozart, Mendelssohn and Barber.
