New library taking shape

CANFIELD

Construction of the $5 million Canfield Branch of the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County is continuing during the winter as planned.

Walls were being erected last week for the building, which is scheduled for substantial completion by mid-October, according to Architect Ronald Cornell Faniro. The new branch is being built at 43 W. Main St., on the same site as the 1969- vintage, 5,104-square-foot branch, which was demolished last fall.

“Canfield is currently on schedule, despite a few bad-weather days,” Heidi Daniel, library director, told trustees of the 15-branch library system during their recent meeting at the Newport Branch.

The foundation was laid before cold weather began, and the storm-water detention system has been installed, she said.

“The library and the architect both feel that the contractors have done a remarkable job of working through the weather, and we hope to see that continue,” Daniel said.

Library officials plan to open the 18,514-square-foot building by the end of this year.

Hudson Construction Inc. of Hermitage, Pa., is the general contractor for the debt-free project.

A temporary library is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, in rent-free quarters at the Mill Creek MetroParks Farm, 7574 Columbiana-Canfield Road.
