Columbiana County updates construction

Staff report

LISBON

Columbiana County Auditor Nancy Milliken is updating new construction in Columbiana County.

Property owners have a statutory obligation to report new buildings and improvements, she said. Any time new property owners make improvements costing $2,000 or more, they must notify the county auditor’s office within 60 days after the start of construction. The auditor’s office needs the following information from the property owner:

An estimate of the cost of the building or improvement.

A description of the lot or land with owner’s name, street address, and parcel number.

Failure to report new construction can carry a 50 percent penalty for each year of neglect in reporting the construction.

To avoid facing a sizable tax bill along with a heavy penalty, compliance should be made with the law. Buildings that have been removed or plan to be removed from the property should be reported only by obtaining a “destroyed property form” from the auditor’s office. Property information may be obtained by logging into the county’s website, www.columbianacntyauditor.org, or by visiting the auditor’s office to make sure that land and buildings are listed correctly. Property owners are encouraged to contact the real estate department of the auditor’s office in the county courthouse, 105 S. Market St., Lisbon, OH 44432, or call 330-424-9515 ext. 1008 and 1013 for further assistance.
