ATHENS, Ohio

Two Ohio University students and a recent graduate were arrested while protesting a decision to raise tuition and fees at the eastern Ohio school.

Seniors Bekki Wyss and Claire Chadwick and alumnus Sal Lake face misdemeanor charges of disrupting a public meeting. They were among 40 protesters who held signs and chanted at Friday’s meeting of the university’s board of trustees.

The board approved a 2 percent increase in tuition for current students and a 5.1 percent increase for incoming freshmen next fall. They also boosted housing costs by 5.3 percent and meals by 1.5 percent.

Ohio University received a special exemption from Ohio’s tuition cap of 2 percent.

Officials say financial aid has also been increased.
