Mahoning dog warden tracking wild strays

YOUNGSTOWN

Officials from the Mahoning County Dog Warden’s office captured two dogs from a pack of wild strays in the Youngstown and Girard area.

Dave Nelson, deputy dog warden, said they investigated the area after the Youngstown Police Department received a report of a dead dog that was killed by other strays.

However, the police found no dogs in the area, alive or deceased, he added.

Nelson said they found tracks in the snow to follow, which led them to a building at an abandoned ballfield near Dupont Street.

Inside the building was straw, cans of dog food, and Taco Bell wrappings. He said a homeless person could be living with the dogs.

The dog wardens also found the two younger dogs in the corner of the building, and took them to the pound.

Kindness traps have been laid out to capture the rest of the pack, Nelson said. “It will be a couple days’ process.”
