The Poland library introduced a new craft project on Jan. 13 with Make Your Own Book Bling, during which children in grades 7-12 could make either earrings or a pin.

“I was just looking for different crafts that we could do for the young adult programming,” said Poland library youth services librarian Alex Lynch, who supervised the project. “I came across it online and I really liked the idea so I did a couple of them and I decided to go with it.”

Lynch printed off 1.3-inch high and 3.5-inch wide versions of the book covers of popular books. She then cut up business cards into tiny squares. When the children arrived for the project, they started by gluing the squares together, with each earring or pin using 18 squares. The book covers were glued to the squares and either an earring hook or a bar pin was added using a hot glue gun (which Lynch took care of for safety reasons) to complete the project. The event lasted about one hour.

“When they’re done they’ll look like mini books,” Lynch said.

Lynch said doing the craft would help the children bring out their creative side.

“It opens up their creativity through it and lean how to work in an environment with other people,” she said.
