For the first time, the Poland library hosted an evening Christmas-themed event for school-aged children on Dec. 22. The event was called Enjoy the Holly Days.
“We’re just trying to think of programs,” Poland library youth librarian Vikki Peck said. “We do a lot of things for preschoolers and thought it would be nice to have something in the evening that the little bit older kids could come to because they’re in school during the day.”
The 30-minute program had several different activities. Peck read the books “Pete the Cat Saves Christmas” and “How Do Dinosaurs Say Happy Hanukkah.” She played the songs “The Freeze,” a participatory song, and “Head and Belly, Beard and Boots,” to the tune “Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes.”
Following that were a few games. The children played Christmas Mad-Libs, a hot potato game with a stuffed snowman, and a game where they used green paper to decorate each other like Christmas trees to see who was decorated the best.
The final activity was a craft where the children made a Christmas tree ornament.
Six children and three adults attended the event.
Peck said she hoped the children would enjoy participating in the program.
“Hopefully they’re going to have fun and just have a positive experience at the library,” she said.
