Ohio State athlete’s death ruled a suicide
COLUMBUS
A coroner says the death of an Ohio State athlete found dead with a gunshot wound to the head will be ruled a suicide.
The final autopsy report for 22-year-old wrestler and football scout team member Kosta Karageorge isn’t quite finished. The county coroner said Wednesday she is awaiting neuropathology reports about Kargeorge’s brain. Dr. Anahi Ortiz says her determination that it was a suicide won’t change. Karageorge was missing for days before he was found in a Columbus trash bin Nov. 30.
Police records of texts from Karageorge’s phone indicate he had just gone through a breakup and sent suicidal messages to his ex-girlfriend. Texts to his mother said concussions were affecting his mind. She told police he’d had several concussions and spells of confusion.
Luck, Romo get picked early in Pro Bowl draft
PHOENIX
Like sandlot players when they were kids, Hall of Famers Chris Carter and Michael Irvin chose sides on Wednesday night.
This time, they were drafting some of the best football players in the game for Team Carter and Team Irvin in their Pro Bowl matchup on Sunday.
Quarterback Andrew Luck of Indianapolis went No. 1 to Team Carter. Irvin chose Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo as No. 2.
They were the only two quarterbacks left from the original Pro Bowl roster. The other six bowed out.
The NFL scrapped its AFC vs. NFC format and went to the current system a year ago. The game is being played for one year in Glendale, Arizona, site of next week’s Super Bowl, and will return to Hawaii next season.
NBA Rising Stars game to use new format
NEW YORK
The NBA has announced the Rising Stars Challenge will feature a new format at this year’s All-Star game weekend pitting first- and second-year players from the United States against first- and second-year players from around the world.
The game will be Feb. 13 in New York, site of this year’s All-Star game.
The NBA’s assistant coaches will select 10 American and 10 international players for the game with one ballot for each of the NBA’s 30 teams, according to the press release.
The rosters will include four guards, four frontcourt players and two players regardless of position. Each team must include at least three first-year players and three second-year players.
The head coaches for each team will consist of an assistant from the 2015 NBA All-Star game coaching staff.
Brewers sign Willis to minor league deal
MILWAUKEE
Left-handed pitcher Dontrelle Willis has signed a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers with an invitation to major league camp in spring training.
Willis won the National League Rookie of the Year award in 2003 while with the Marlins. He is trying to get back to the majors for the first time since 2011, when he was 1-6 in 13 games with the Cincinnati Reds.
Willis has bounced around organizations since then on minor league deals.
The Brewers could view Willis as a spot starter after trading away veteran Yovani Gallardo to the Texas Rangers. They are also looking for a left-handed reliever in the bullpen after not re-signing Zach Duke and Tom Gorzelanny.
