Radio show smoothing out evenings

Lenny Green is now setting the mood in Youngstown.

Local adult-urban radio station “Hot Jamz” 1570 AM WHTX has added the “The Quiet Storm With Lenny Green” to its lineup. The syndicated show airs week nights from 7 p.m. to midnight. It originates out of New York, where it’s been a market fixture for years.

Green is known for his instantly identifiable voice — deep and rich — and his smooth delivery. His style blends with an R&B music mix to create a relaxed (some say romantic) atmosphere for listeners.

Green grew up in Brooklyn and made his public singing debut at age 12 at the Apollo Theater’s famous amateur night. He would go on to study broadcasting in college before launching a career as an on-air personality.

Over the years, Green also has interviewed a long list of music stars who suit his show, including Patti LaBelle, Diana Ross, Natalie Cole, Lionel Richie, Smokey Robinson and the late Barry White and Gerald Levert.

A FEAST OF GREAT MOVIES IN THEATERS THIS WEEKEND

This is the greatest time of the year for movie lovers.

The Oscars are looming, and The Vindicator’s annual contest to pick the winners is under way. Those who pick the most Oscar winners will be rewarded with gift certificates from Rulli Bros. Market. The ballot is in the centerspread of today’s Vibe magazine.

Another reason why film buffs are in heaven is the amazing lineup of quality films in area theaters.

As of Friday, the following films — each an Oscar contender — will be playing in Valley multiplexes (some already are): “American Sniper,” “Big Hero 6,” “Birdman,” “Foxcatcher,” “Gone Girl,” “The Imitation Game,” “Interstellar,” “Into the Woods,” “Selma,” “The Theory of Everything,” “Unbroken” and “Whiplash.”

ACTORS, CREW ARE SOUGHT FOR FILM GROUP’S DATABASE

Actors, crew and all types of union and nonunion set workers interested in working on films are urged to register with the Youngstown Regional Film Commission.

The fledgling commission, which is a nonprofit organization, is still adding to its database of area talent. Its goal is to have a stable of qualified people to work on films that it hopes to lure to the area.

The commission is partnering with the Oakland Center for the Arts, where folks can go to register for the database this Saturday from noon to 3 p.m., and Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 6 to 9 p.m.

The Oakland is at 220 W. Boardman St., downtown Youngstown.

The cost for processing will be $5. A photographer will be available. Photos and information for the database also can be submitted at projectyounghollywood.org.

The commission hopes to announce a film project in the very near future. Check the website for updates and casting calls.
