Moss-Pelini reunion possible

Staff report

YOUNGSTOWN

Former Nebraska defensive end Avery Moss visited Youngstown State on Tuesday, according to HuskerOnline.

Moss, who played under YSU coach Bo Pelini at Nebraska, was banned from campus after being convicted of public indecency last April. He would be eligible to play in 2015 if he transfers to YSU but would need to sit out a year if he transferred to an FBS school.

A Tempe, Ariz., native, Moss was named to the Big Ten’s all-freshman team in 2013 after playing in 12 games with three starts. He finished with 36 tackles, including eight for loss with 4.5 sacks. He redshirted in 2012 after playing three of the first four games. He suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 4.

Moss’ addition would bolster a defensive line that already features junior-to-be Derek Rivers, who set YSU’s regular season sack record with 13 last fall, and senior-to-be Terrell Williams, who had 8.5 sacks.

Stoops to DC?

Assistant coach Ron Stoops may be promoted to defensive coordinator, according to a report from WFMJ-TV.

Stoops has spent the last five seasons as an assistant coach under Eric Wolford, coaching the safeties in 2010 before moving over to linebackers beginning in 2011. He has also served as the team’s director of high school relations.

Stoops, whose brothers Bob (Oklahoma), Mike (Arizona) and Mark (Kentucky) have all been FBS head coaches, spent nine seasons as Cardinal Mooney’s defensive coordinator, winning state championships in 2004, 2006 and 2009 and finishing runner-up in 2005 and 2007.

Neither Stoops nor Pelini responded to interview requests about the report.
