Gizzie, Katzman are honored

Nick Gizzie of East Palestine) and Ed Katzman(Boardman) received Lifetime Contributor awards from the Ohio Track and Cross Country Officials Association at last weekend’s banquet.

Lou Brown will be the new president for the Greater Youngstown Track Officials Association.

Bennett, Whitner added to Pro Bowl

LAKE FOREST, Ill.

Chicago Bears tight end Martellus Bennett and Cleveland Browns safety Donte Whitner have been selected for the Pro Bowl.

They replace New England’s Rob Gronkowski and Seattle’s Earl Thomas, with the Patriots and Seahawks headed to the Super Bowl.

Bennett’s selection is the first for him and the first by a Bears tight end since Hall of Famer Mike Ditka earned one for the 1965 season. He led NFL tight ends with a club-record 90 receptions and was third at the position with 916 yards receiving.

Whitner, headed to his third straight Pro Bowl, had 106 tackles in his first season with the Browns. A Cleveland native, he signed with them after spending his first eight seasons with Buffalo and San Francisco.

The Pro Bowl is Sunday in Glendale, Arizona.

Cardinals to honor Taveras with patches

ST. LOUIS

The St. Louis Cardinals will wear uniform patches this season to honor the late Oscar Taveras.

The rookie outfielder died last October in a car accident in his native Dominican Republic.

Cardinals uniforms will feature patches with Taveras’ initials and his No. 18. Team chairman Bill DeWitt Jr. said the club also is renovating a field in Taveras’ hometown of Sosua.

Brewers trade Gallardo to the Texas Rangers

Pitcher Yovani Gallardo has been traded by the Milwaukee Brewers to the Texas Rangers for three players and cash.

Gallardo was 8-11 last year with a 3.51 ERA in 32 starts last season and 89-64 with a 3.69 ERA in an eight-year career with Milwaukee.

Infielder Luis Sardinas, and right-handers Corey Knebel and Marcos Diplan were dealts to Milwaukee as part of Monday’s trade, which could indicate the Brewers may try to pursue free-agent pitcher James Shields.

Gallardo’s contract specifies his 2015 salary increased from $13 million to $14 million when he was traded. Gallardo is eligible for free agency in November.

Milwaukee took Gallardo in the second round of the 2004 amateur draft out of Trimble Tech High School in Fort Worth, less than 20 miles from the Rangers’ ballpark.

Marlins agree with Don Kelly on deal

MIAMI

The Miami Marlins and utilityman Don Kelly have agreed to terms on a minor league contract.

Kelly saw time primarily as a first baseman, third baseman and outfielder last season for the Detroit Tigers, batting .245 with seven RBIs in 163 at-bats.

Kelly has spent parts of seven seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh and Detroit, batting .234 with 23 home runs and 95 RBIs in 570 games.

Police: B.J. Penn arrested after fight

KIHEI, Hawaii

Maui police say former two-time UFC champion B.J. Penn was arrested after fighting with a man outside a bar in Kihei.

Police say the Hilo native, whose real name is Jay D. Penn, was in a physical altercation with a 37-year-old man Saturday night.

The man was taken to Maui Memorial Medical Center, where he was treated and released.

Penn was taken into custody but was not charged, police said.
