YOUNGSTOWN

Youngstown State University’s chapter of Phi Kappa Phi is among only 24 chapters nationwide to be recognized as a Chapter of Merit.

The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi, the nation’s oldest and most selective collegiate honor society for all academic disciplines, recently recognized the YSU chapter as a Chapter of Merit.

The award is given to chapters that excel in recognizing and promoting academic excellence in all fields of higher education and engaging the community of scholars in service to others. By receiving the award, the YSU chapter is recognized as a thriving organization that meets regularly, has annual initiations and applies frequently for Phi Kappa Phi’s select awards, grants and fellowships.

“The Chapter of Merit Award presented to Chapter 143 of The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi represents the cumulative efforts of a dedicated group of officers and members,” said chapter President Ron Shaklee, YSU professor of Geography and director of the YSU University Scholars program. “The Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi represents excellence in the academic sphere. It also represents continuing excellence as members move into their post-academic lives and careers. We are very proud of what our chapter has accomplished and look forward to continuing this rich tradition.”

Phi Kappa Phi has chapters on more than 300 select colleges and universities in North America and the Philippines.
