Youngstown ZIP code area is among the highest-paying in Ohio
YOUNGSTOWN
Businesses in one particular Youngstown area are paying higher salaries compared with the rest of the state.
And it’s not in downtown.
The 44510 ZIP code area placed 14th out of 1,054 areas in Ohio for the highest average annual payroll per employee, according to a study by NerdWallet, a consumer-advocacy website.
The NerdWallet study was based on a survey of business patterns collected by the U.S. Census Bureau in 2012.
“One question our analysts ask is, ‘Where is a good place to live based on certain factors?’ In this study, we looked at the ZIP codes in Ohio to see where the highest-paying payrolls, on average, were located. This can serve as a comparative look across the state by ZIP code,” said Spencer Tierney, a NerdWallet analyst.
The 44510 ZIP code is home to Vallourec Star, a manufacturer of steel products for the oil and gas industry, on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard. Vallourec Star is a subsidiary of France-based company Vallourec USA. The company employs about 700. The average salary there is $50,000, according to Vindicator files.
“The trend that all money is not located downtown is what the data showed,” Tierney said.
Other businesses in the area include Coronado Steel off Funston Drive, M7 Technologies on Ohio Works Drive, Metalico Inc. on Division Street, Northeast Ohio Infectious Disease on Parmelee Avenue and Prout Boiler Heating and Welding Inc. on Temple Street.
“That ZIP code houses so many industrial companies. That’s why it’s high” on the average annual payroll, said Guy Coviello, vice president of government and media affairs for the Youngstown/Warren Regional Chamber.
He said that it’s a positive sign to see industries coming along in the community.
The average annual payroll per employee for the Youngstown area was $69,157. The highest-paying area in Ohio was ZIP code 45201 in Cincinnati with an annual payroll average of $397,980 per employee.
“We’re not trying to prove that location and salary are correlated. It’s more that location can be another factor to consider for job seekers, especially those who want to know where high-paying jobs tend to be in Ohio or other states,” Tierney said.
