POLAND

The township had a deficit of about $175,000 in 2014, Fiscal Officer Paul Canter reported to the board of trustees.

The township’s expenditures last year totaled $3,042,903 and revenue was $2,869,287, creating a deficit of $173,616, Canter said at Wednesday night’s meeting.

The deficit is not a concern, however, Canter said. He said more than $70,000 of it is because of an extra pay period in 2014, and he does not expect a similar situation in 2015.

“That deficit is going to be about zero,” he said of 2015. “We were operating on a little bit of a deficit, but that’s going to start coming down.”

One reason for that, he said, is that the township recently changed its health insurance and will pay about $94,000 less for health insurance in 2015.

In other business, the board voted to allocate $3,000 to the Poland Historical Society, which maintains the historic Little Red Schoolhouse on Center Road.

Society representatives asked the board for additional funds to repair several windows at the schoolhouse and to consider making a donation for a new Ohio History Connection, formerly the Ohio Historical Society, marker for which the Poland society is applying.

Trustees did not vote on either request, but said they will consider both.

The marker, which will be Poland’s sixth, will recognize the historical significance of the township and schoolhouse. The cost to install one is $2,730.

“I have no problems with supporting that,” Trustee Bob Lidle said. “I think this is a great thing you do for the community.”

The historical society’s effort to install this marker is part of an ongoing campaign to bring more state historical markers to the community.
