Man shot by Ohio airport police had knives taped to his legs

COLUMBUS (AP) — Court records show a man fatally shot by police outside a central Ohio airport had two knives taped to his legs and more in his SUV, where he also had a gas mask, other masks, computers, cameras and cellphones.

A police officer’s statement says the man tried to conceal weapons and buy an airline ticket using a woman’s ID. The officer describes that behavior as “consistent with someone who intended to hijack an aircraft.”

The statement was filed this week as investigators sought permission to search data on a cellphone linked to the case.

The man, 41-year-old Hashim Abdul-Rasheed, was shot Jan. 7 at Port Columbus International Airport. Police say officers confronted him, and he lunged at one with a knife.

He had a court-documented history of mental illness.
