Mike Zordich is leaving Youngstown State after one season to coach safeties at Michigan.
Zordich, a Chaney High graduate who coached the Penguins’ safeties last fall, is the second Mahoning County native to join Jim Harbaugh’s staff. Boardman High graduate D.J. Durkin was hired as the defensive coordinator last week.
In 2014, YSU safeties Donald D’Alesio (Cardinal Mooney) and Tre’ Moore had career years, with D’Alesio registering 91 tackles and two interceptions to earn honorable mention all-conference. Moore had 78 tackles and a team-high four interceptions in his first season as a starter.
After a standout career at Penn State, Zordich played cornerback and safety in the NFL from 1986-98. He served as the safeties coach for the Philadelphia Eagles in 2011 and 2012. In 2009 and 2010 he served in a quality control room for the Eagles’ defense. He coached YSU’s safeties in the spring of 2009. He also coached on the high school level as an assistant at Chaney and Mooney.
Zordich’s sons, Michael and Alex, played at Mooney.
