Indians’ draft pick Sheffield arrested
TULLAHOMA, Tenn.
Cleveland Indians minor league pitcher and recent first-round draft pick Justus Sheffield has been arrested on charges of aggravated burglary and violating the drinking-age law.
He is the nephew of former All-Star outfielder Gary Sheffield.
The arrest warrant provided by the Coffee County General Sessions Court says the 18-year-old Sheffield entered a residence at Tullahoma, Tennessee, on Sunday without the owner’s consent. The warrant says Sheffield “went to the bedroom of an acquaintance and began yelling and threatening the victim.” The warrant also says Sheffield acknowledged that he’d been drinking.
Sheffield was released after posting $5,500 bond.
The Indians issued a statement Tuesday saying the organization has spoken with him and is in the process of gathering more information. Cleveland drafted him with the 31st overall pick last June.
Busch says ex-girlfriend set out for revenge
DOVER, Del.
A man who counseled NASCAR driver Kurt Busch’s ex-girlfriend amid the couple’s breakup last year says she initially was brokenhearted but later set out for revenge.
Richard Andrew Sniffen testified Tuesday that Patricia Driscoll told him that she would destroy Busch and take him down. Sniffen is a Christian musician who performs at NASCAR outreach events and knows both Driscoll and Busch.
Driscoll has asked a Delaware judge for a no-contact order against Busch. She says he grabbed her by the throat and face and slammed her head into a wall three times last September at Dover International Speedway.
Busch testified Monday that he didn’t assault Driscoll. His attorneys have portrayed her as a scorned woman out to destroy his career.
Garrett, Marinelli set to return to Cowboys
IRVING, Texas
A person with knowledge of both deals told The Associated Press on Tuesday that Dallas coach Jason Garrett has agreed to a five-year contract and defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli also is returning on a three-year contract.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the team had yet to announce the agreements.
Garrett led the Cowboys to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. He will make about $6 million annually after just completing a four-year, $20 million contract.
Questions about Garrett’s job security festered through three straight 8-8 seasons before the Cowboys won the NFC East at 12-4 and beat Detroit in the playoffs before falling to Green Bay.
