Free workshop on suicide, depression

Learn more about depression and suicide at a free workshop at 9:30 a.m. Jan. 31 at Hubbard Public Library, 436 W. Liberty St.

Developed by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, in partnership with the New York State Office of Mental Health, this educational program “More Than Sad: Suicide Prevention Education for Teachers and other school personnel,” is designed to help teachers and other school personnel learn more about teen suicide and how they can play a role in its prevention.

The workshop has two films, each about 25 minutes long, and a manual that integrates the films into a comprehensive suicide-prevention program.

Bariatric surgery session information

HERMITAGE, PA.

Sharon Regional Health System will offer a free bariatric surgery informational session at 6 p.m. Jan. 28 at the Hermitage Diagnostic and Imaging Center, 2435 Garden Way.

The sessions include information on obesity and its impact on overall health, a review of surgical weight-loss options including benefits and risks, a look at body-mass index, along with other information to assist participants in making an informed decision about surgical weight-loss treatments.

The bariatric surgery program at Sharon Regional is under the direction of bariatric and minimally invasive surgeon Dr. Sheetal Nijhawan. For information or to register, call 724-981-4561.

Free fitness and cooking demo

WARREN

Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, will host a preview Saturday of some of the free fitness classes and cooking demonstrations available through its Stepping Out program.

Zumba, line dancing, core-strength training, healthy cooking demos and tastings will be offered from 10 a.m. to noon at United Methodist Community Center, 309 N. Park Ave., and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at Grace AME Church, 1137 Main Ave. SW.

Stepping Out provides fitness activities, healthy-cooking demonstrations and health screenings throughout the year at community centers in Youngstown and Warren. The program helps people without easy access to commercial fitness centers improve their health.

Wellness seminar

WARREN

Drayer Physical Therapy Institute will offer a free public wellness seminar from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Jan. 21 at its Warren outpatient center, 8094 E. Market St.

Topics include choosing the right exercises, fads, fallacies of training, and performance safety.
