OSU expected to hire Beck
DALLAS
Former Nebraska assistant Tim Beck will be hired by Ohio State to replace co-offensive coordinator Tom Herman, a person familiar with the deal told The Associated Press on Sunday.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because the deal was not to be announced until after Ohio State played Oregon tonight in the College Football Playoff national championship game.
Herman is leaving the Buckeyes to become the head coach at Houston. He has been the Buckeyes co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach under Urban Meyer since 2012.
Beck, a Cardinal Mooney High School graduate, had been at Nebraska since 2008, but he was not retained by new coach Mike Riley after Bo Pelini was fired. Under Beck, the Cornhuskers ran a spread offense that never ranked lower than sixth in the Big Ten in total offense since Nebraska joined the conference in 2011.
Beck worked with Ohio State co-offensive coordinator and line coach Ed Warinner at Kansas in 2007. The Jayhawks went 12-1 and were eighth in the nation in total offense at 480 yards per game that season.
Like Herman, Beck also has ties to Texas. Beck was a high school coach in Texas for six years before going to Kansas and recruited the Lone Star state for Nebraska.
OSU’s Washington, Decker to return
DALLAS
Ohio State coach Urban Meyer says offensive tackle Taylor Decker and defensive tackle Adolphus Washington had told him they will return for their senior seasons.
Decker was a second-team All-Big Ten selection. The 6-foot-7, 315-pound junior held down left tackle for the Buckeyes (14-1).
Washington was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. The 6-4, 295-pound junior had 45 tackles and 3.5 sacks.
Meyer said Sunday during his last news conference before the College Football Playoff national championship game against Oregon that Decker and Washington were the only underclassmen from Ohio State considering an early jump to the NFL.
Meyer also re-iterated that he expects quarterback Braxton Miller, who injured his shoulder, to be part of the team next season.
Walker, Matsuyama tied for Hyundai lead
KAPALUA, Hawaii
Jimmy Walker and Hideki Matsuyama are tied for the lead going into the final round of the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Matsuyama shot a 7-under 66 on Sunday to match the best score of the week. He made three straight birdies on the front nine and back nine, and closed with a delicate pitch down the slope to 2 feet for birdie on the par-5 18th.
Walker began to pull away with five birdies in 10 holes. But he didn’t make another birdie until a 4-foot putt on the last hole for a 67. They were tied at 17-under 202.
