Eagle Award

Boy Scout Troop 80, chartered to Mount Olivet United Church of Christ, North Lima, will present an Eagle Scout Award to Travis Douglas Bernard, son of Douglas and Denise Bernard of North Lima.

The court-of-honor ceremony will place take place later this month at the church. Troop 80 is part of the Whispering Pines District, Greater Western Reserve Council. Scoutmaster is Kurt Hilderbrand.

Bernard joined Troop 80 in 2010 and has had troop positions of senior patrol leader, bugler and scribe.

He has camped a total of 33 nights, completed more than 234 hours of service projects and has earned 25 merit badges. He has attended three years of summer camp at Manatoc Scout Reservation. Bernard also has earned the World Conservation Award, Tote and Chit, Fire and Chit, and 2010 Centennial Award.

For his Eagle Scout service project, he coordinated, supervised, gathered and delivered humanitarian-aid packages for underprivileged citizens of Belize.

He is a senior at South Range High School, where he is a band member, guard on the football team and a member of National Honor Society. Bernard is a member of Old North Church in Canfield, serves in its AWANA program, and participates in the youth group.

Naturalist recognized

Ray Novotny, outdoor-education manager at Mill Creek MetroParks, received two national awards at a recent National Association for Interpretation workshop in Denver.

A park employee since 1985, Novotny is a life member of NAI, whose awards recognize excellence in naturalist interpretation.

Novotny received the association’s Meritorious Service Award for his nominations of others for awards for nature and cultural heritage education.

He also received the Thomas Say Naturalist Award of Excellence for an outstanding event or program for his reptile exhibit and Bug Day programs.

That award is named after the early 19th century self-taught naturalist Thomas Say, who identified more than 1,500 species of insects and animals unique to North America.
