Sen. Brown nominates 4 from area for military academies

Staff report

U.S. Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, has nominated 12 students from Northeast Ohio for admission to Military Service Academies, including four from Mahoning and Trumbull counties.

The area students are: Trumbull County, North Bloomfield: Katlynn Hennessey, Bloomfield High School, Military Academy; and Liberty: Anna Hallam, Liberty High School, Merchant Marine Academy.

Mahoning County, Canfield: Richard Kilbert, Canfield High School, Merchant Marine Academy; and Boardman: Marcus Masello, Boardman High School, Military Academy.

Each year, Brown nominates students for each slot available at our nation’s service academies requiring congressional recommendations. This year, openings were available for Brown to nominate up to 20 students to the Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.; up to 10 students to the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point, N.Y.; and up to 10 students to the Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md.

A nomination does not guarantee acceptance into a service academy. The Academy’s Admissions Board ultimately decides who receives an appointment.

Brown’s nominations are based on the recommendation of his Service Academy Selection Advisory Committee. It is composed of former academy graduates, active service members, veterans, parents of academy attendees, and community leaders from throughout the state.
