Local Boy Scout troops to host annual winter event

The annual Whispering Pines District Boy Scout Klondike Derby will be on Jan. 16-18 and will take place at Camp Stambaugh in Canfield.

The Klondike Derby is an annual district winter event to build on scout skills for boys 11-17 in an outdoor environment concentrating on outdoor activities and character building skills.

Venturing Crew and Troop 101 of Struthers, along with help from volunteer staff members, will host the annual event. This year’s theme will be “Polar Beach Blast” and will include a variety of skills from outdoor cooking, knot tying, fire building, first aid rescue and beach related competitions.

During the Klondike Derby scouts will be awarded gold nuggets that can be used to bid on camp related items at an open auction at the conclusion of the event. Also scouts will be awarded the “Sourdough Award.” This award is for scouts that sleep outside during Friday evening in tents or under the stars. The event will conclude with an interfaith denomination service.
