Newcomers Club of Canfield to meet
The January meeting of the Newcomers Club of Canfield will be Jan. 13 at 6:30 p.m. at the Boardman home of one of the members. This meeting will be a “White Elephant Bingo” - a game night you won’t want to miss. Bring at least two new or re-gifted items, wrapped. Also bring a dish or drink to share. The Newcomers Club of Canfield, Inc. meets monthly, August through May, for social time, special guests and to plan and promote its mission. The club is a 501(c)(7) organization - a purely social organization. The Newcomers Club of Canfield, Inc. is a great way to meet new people and build lasting relationships whether you are new to the community or a long time resident. You’ll meet new friends, have some fun and help others in the community. All women in the Mahoning Valley are welcome to join. Pollnow named to Dean’s List
Kaitlin Pollnow of Canfield has been named to the Dean’s List for the Fall 2014 quarter at Trumbull Business College.
The Bistro at MCCTC announces new winter and spring hours
Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at MCCTC, has new winter and spring hours starting in January. The restaurant will be open for dine in or carryout from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Open dates are Jan. 13, 14, 15, 21 and 22; Feb. 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26; March 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 and 31; and April 1 and 2. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. Pancake breakfast to be Jan. 11
The Canfield High School swim and dive team will be hosting its annual Pancake Breakfast on Jan. 11 in the Canfield High School Cafeteria. Tickets will be available at the door. The cost for adults will be $6.50 and for children (ages 3-10) it will be $4.
Surprise sale to begin Jan. 6
Helping Hands Closet at Western Reserve United Methodist Church, located at 4580 Canfield Road in Canfield, will be having a “Surprise Sale” starting on Jan. 6 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Helping Hands has new and gently used clothes for the entire family.
ARWA to have January meeting
The Mill Creek Chapter of the American Business Women’s Association will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 13 at A La Cart Catering, located at 429 Lisbon Street in Canfield. Retired history teacher Elizabeth “Liz” Cole-Clark of The Upton Association is the guest speaker. She will talk about Harriet Taylor Upton, whose residence in Warren became the center of the National Women’s Suffrage Association in the early 1900’s and whose life has been referenced in the popular PBS series “Downton Abbey.” The buffet dinner will include Southern baked chicken, sausage with peppers and onions, sand-trap potatoes, Italian mixed vegetables, salad and dessert. Police and school partner for safety initiative
The Canfield Local School District is partnering with the Canfield Police Department for a collaborative safety initiative. The Police Department purchased Child Safety Fingerprint ID Kits that will be provided to all elementary school students with parental/guardian permission. The kits will provide space for personal demographic information, dental chart, medical conditions, identify features and an emergency directory. School Resource Officer Garstka will complete the fingerprint record section of the kit. Garstka is scheduled to be in Hilltop Jan. 12-16 and in C.H. Campbell Jan. 20-23. Holiday closings
All libraries in the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County system will be closed on Jan. 19 for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Friends of PLYMC Canfield committee
The Canfield Committee will meet at 6:30 p.m. on Jan. 14 at the Boardman library in the meeting room. This event is for adults.
The Gathering Place to host senior event
The Gathering Place will host its next event at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 N. Broad Street in Canfield, on Jan. 12 at 11 a.m. The program will include lunch for an additional donation and a speaker on local history. Attendees are asked to bring old tools, fashion, photos or any other items for sharing and discussion. This is a free community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens that takes place on the second Monday of the month each month. Different games and activities are offered each month. Gamblers Annonymous to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (Cornersburg). Both meetings begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. and last about 1-1/2 hours. Those who believe gambling has affected any part of their lives are urged to attend. For more information, call 330-505-5060.
CHS teacher to speak at TEDx Youngstown
Canfield High School teacher, Chis Jennings, has been selected to speak at the upcoming TEDx Youngstown Conference. Jennings, whose talk is called “High School Journalism Can Save Cities,” will address the conference’s theme “Breaking Boundaries” by discussing the potential for high school journalism programs, particularly in suburban communities, to be drivers of new business into struggling cities like Youngstown. Jennings will reference the work his journalism classes and news staff have done over the last few years and will be including information about what he has experienced since coming to Canfield. Jennings is in his eighth year of teaching and his third year at Canfield High School, where he teaches tenth- and eleventh-grade English, as well as Journalism. Along with the courses he teaches, Jennings advises the school’s newspaper, TV news show and Student Council. The conference is on Jan. 23 from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. at Youngstown State University. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED–like experience. Tickets are available at tedxyoungstown.com.
Wine taste fundraiser to be Feb. 6
The ninth annual St. Michael Parish Wine Taste will take place on Feb. 6 inside the church Family Life Center. Proceeds from the event benefit the Center. For more information, contact the Parish Office at 330-533-6839.
Friends of PLYMC’s Canfield Committee sets fundraiser
Support the new Canfield Library by purchasing Stone Fruit Coffee special blend for the holidays. The cost is $15 per bag. Coffee can be purchased from one of the Friends of the Library or at Stone Fruit Coffee in Canfield. Proceeds benefit the Canfield Library Capital Campaign.
