The village soon will get some additional road salt from the state, police chief and streets commissioner Russell Beatty Jr. says.

The Ohio Department of Transportation offered the village road salt, since it has extra because winter so far has been mild, Beatty said.

Beatty plans to purchase about 50 tons, which will cost the village $5,272.50 at the cost of $105.45 per ton that ODOT offered. The decision was discussed at a village council meeting Tuesday night.

Although he thinks the village currently has enough road salt to get through a mild winter, Beatty said he will buy the extra supply just in case the weather worsens.

Another item of business council considered is a plan to install a sidewalk on Sheridan Road, between Island Drive and Johnston Place, near North Elementary School.

Council members and Mayor Tim Sicafuse plan to meet with an engineer to come up with plans for the project before a grant application deadline in March, Sicafuse said.

The village will apply for funds from Safe Routes to School, a grant program that helps communities install sidewalks to increase foot traffic to schools.

Poland Township participated in the grant program last year to install a sidewalk that stretches along state Route 170 from Nesbitt Street to Dobbins Road, near Dobbins Elementary School. The township got $500,000 in grant money for the project.

Also at Tuesday’s meeting, the council approved a resolution to transfer $600,000 to a Farmers National Bank checking account since the village’s former bank no longer accepts government accounts.

Village council also voted to re-appoint Joe Mazur as council president and set the meeting schedule for 2015. Council meetings will be on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at 7:30 p.m. at the village hall.
