Newly selected International Boxing Hall of Famer and former world lightweight champion Ray ‘Boom Boom” Mancini will be the featured speaker at the 48th annual Curbstone Coaches Hall of Fame induction ceremony on May 3 at Mr. Anthony’s.
The Hall of Fame will honor former local standouts in various sports.

57 YSU athletes post perfect GPAs

A school-record 57 Youngstown State student-athletes posted perfect 4.00 grade point averages in the fall semester. Of that group, 27 have maintained perfect GPAs during their undergraduate careers, which also ranks as a school-best.

Ex-YSU assistant to coach Bluffton soccer
BLUFFTON, OHIO
Former Youngstown State assistant coach Rhonda Gottschalk was hired as Bluffton University’s head women’s soccer coach.
Gottschalk coached at YSU in 2012 when the Penguins had their most successful season in school history, going 8-9.
Game of Hope Classic set for Feb. 8

The 11th annual Game of Hope Classic charity basketball game will take place Feb. 8 at the Beeghly Center. Tickets are $5 for adults and $3 for children 12 and under. The Hope Foundation of the Mahoning Valley is sponsering the event which features a kids fun zone this year. The fun zone opens at 11 a.m and the game is scheduled to start at 3 p.m.
Ohio hunters harvest more than 13,000 deer
Hunters harvested 13,726 white-tailed deer during Ohio’s 2015 muzzleloader season, Jan. 2-5, according to the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Hunters have checked 167,013 deer so far in all 2014-2015 hunting seasons, compared to 182,861 at the same point last year. Hunters harvested 16,464 deer during the 2014 deer-muzzleloader season. Mahoning county produced 141 this year (162 in 2014) and Trumbull county had 234 this season (222 in 2014).
Former Cowboys player Pugh dead at 70
Jethro Pugh, an unsung member of the “Doomsday Defense” that helped the Dallas Cowboys win two Super Bowls in the 1970s, has died. He was 70.
