YSU offers horn workshop
Staff report
YOUNGSTOWN
Youngstown State University’s Dana School of Music will offer the third annual Horn Workshop from noon to 5 p.m. Sunday in Bliss Hall Room 2326.
The event is geared toward high school and college horn players. Guest clinician is Stephen Kostyniak, associate principal horn of the Pittsburgh Symphony.
Kostyniak joined the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra in 2006, previously serving as associate principal horn in the Utah Symphony.
Born in Schenectady, N.Y., Kostyniak began French horn lessons at age 8. By the time he had graduated from high school, he had performed in major music centers in the U.S. and Europe, including the Mozarteum in Salzburg, the Musikverein in Vienna, the Tanglewood Music Center, the Kennedy Center and Tschaikovsky Hall in Leningrad. He also performed in Moscow, Prague, Budapest, Copenhagen, Stockholm and throughout Austria and Norway.
At 17, Kostyniak entered The Juilliard School in New York City where he studied with New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Horn, Jerome Ashby. While there, he performed with the Philharmonic, the New Jersey and New Haven, Connecticut Symphonies, recorded with the Orchestra of St. Luke’s, and toured with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra.
Sunday’s clinic is free and open to the public and geared toward musicians of all levels. It is particularly helpful for students who will participate in solo ensemble competitions and for those who will be auditioning. Students should bring their own instruments but do not need to bring sheet music. The clinic includes a recital by Stacie Mickens, Dana School of Music assistant professor of horn and Kostyniak; a master class; and horn choir as well as horn displays and merchandise from Motter’s Music.
Free parking will be available in the M-1 Wick Avenue parking deck. While reservations are not mandatory, students are asked to confirm their attendance by emailing Mickens at srmickens@ysu.edu.
