Death sentence upheld

WARREN

The Warren-based 11th District Court of Appeals has upheld the death sentence of Nate Jackson, convicted along with Donna Roberts, then 57, in the 2001 Howland murder of Roberts’ ex-husband, Robert Fingerhut.

At the time of the murder, Fingerhut was living with Roberts. Jackson, then 29, and Roberts exchanged letters and phone calls plotting to kill Fingerhut when Jackson was released so Roberts could collect more than $500,000 in life-insurance proceeds.

On Monday, the appellate court ruled against Jackson’s request for a new trial and his request for his death sentence to be vacated.

Judge Colleen Mary O’Toole dissented in both decisions, saying she would vacate Jackson’s death sentence and send the matter back to the trial court for resentencing.

Renovation at deli

POLAND

The Kravitz Delicatessen location in the lower level of the Poland Library will close temporarily at the end of business Jan. 16 to undergo maintenance work. The deli is expected to be closed for two to three weeks, according to a news release from the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. A reopening date will be announced.

The renovation work will include replacing worn flooring behind the counters and in the kitchen, painting and minor repairs. When the deli reopens, it will feature some new menu items and enhanced catering services.

Woman cited in theft

YOUNGSTOWN

Police cited a woman for theft at a Mahoning Avenue store about 6:30 p.m. Monday after she was caught with $40 worth of candy in her purse.

Reports said an officer was there and was told a woman, later identified as Ashly Stiles, 24, no address given, put the candy in her purse and walked up to the counter but did not pay for it. Reports said Stiles told the officer she did take the candy.

Struthers parking ban

STRUTHERS

There is a parking ban until further notice to allow crews to remove snow from side streets and main thoroughfares, city officials said. The ban went into effect late Tuesday night.
