Vance scores late to lift Phantoms over Steel

CHICAGO

Carson Vance’s goal with 4:47 remaining lifted the Youngstown Phantoms to a 4-3 victory over the Chicago Steel on Friday at the Edge Arena.

Kiefer Sherwood scored two goals for the Phantoms (15-7-5, 35 points), the fourth-place team in the USHL’s Eastern Conference.

Bryon Lemos scored Youngstown’s other goal while Taylor Best recorded two assists.

Goaltender Colin DeAugustine stopped 31 shots to earn the victory.

After falling behind 1-0 just 31 seconds into the game, Lemos and Taylor scored for a 2-1 lead. Best set up both goals.

In the second period, the Steel (12-14-2, 26 points) scored twice to regain the lead. Sherwood’s second goal set up by Josh Melnick came on the power play.

Chase Pearson assisted on the winning goal.

Phantoms penalty killers allowed one goal in three tries.

The Phantoms will be in Des Moines, Iowa, today and Sunday for games against the Buccaneers (13-11-4, 30 points).
