Doug Marrone steps down as coach of Bills
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y.
Doug Marrone has stepped down as coach of the Buffalo Bills.
Bills owner Terry Pegula said Wednesday that Marrone exercised the opt-out clause in his contract.
The decision came as a surprise after Marrone led the Bills to a 9-7 finish in his second season in Buffalo. It was the Bills’ first winning season in 10 years. Buffalo, however, missed the playoffs to extend the NFL’s longest active postseason drought to 15 seasons.
The opt-out clause in Marrone’s contract went into effect after Pegula and wife Kim bought the team in October. Marrone had until Wednesday to make his decision.
The team was sold after Hall of Fame owner Ralph Wilson died in March.
Seahawks’ Baldwin takes jab at Harbaugh
RENTON, Wash.
Seattle Seahawks wide receiver Doug Baldwin couldn’t keep from taking a jab at former San Francisco 49ers and new Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh.
Baldwin, who played for Harbaugh at Stanford, was asked Wednesday for his thoughts on Harbaugh leaving San Francisco to take the head coach job at Michigan.
“I wish him the best of luck. I know he’s anxious to get that program turned around and do some great things at Michigan,” Baldwin said. “I wish him the best of luck and go Buckeyes.”
Baldwin has been open about his past issues with Harbaugh. Last season before the NFC championship game, Baldwin said he seriously considered transferring from Stanford, but that his views toward Harbaugh had mellowed since joining the Seahawks.
Colts’ Cherilus ends season on IR
INDIANAPOLIS
The Indianapolis Colts placed starting right tackle Gosder Cherilus on injured reserve Wednesday, four days before their playoff opener against Cincinnati.
Cherilus had been one of Indianapolis’ most consistent run blockers and pass protectors until dealing with a series of injuries. The most recent, a groin injury, ends Cherilus’ season and leaves a major hole on the offensive line heading into Sunday’s wild-card game.
Indy (11-5) replaced Cherilus with Xavier Nixon at Dallas, then moved left guard Jack Mewhort to right tackle for the regular-season finale at Tennessee. Moving Mewhort also forced Indy to insert backup center A.Q. Shipley at left guard.
The AFC South champs promoted offensive lineman David Arkin from the practice squad to the active roster and added receiver Kadron Boone to the practice squad.
