The Youngstown Metro Umpire Association will hold a OHSAA baseball/softball meeting Sunday beginning at 1:15 p.m. at Lucianno’s Banquet Center, 1732 S. Raccoon Road.

Umpires are reminded that they must attend four meetings to meet state requirements.

Canfield’s Falkingham to play in all-star game

CLEVELAND

Canfield senior Braden Falkingham has been selected to play in the annual Greater Cleveland High School Hockey League All-Star game at the Quicken Loans Arena at 12:30 p.m. on March 8.

High school hockey players from throughout northern Ohio were picked to participate based on their regular season performance.

The game will be played on the undercard of that night’s Lake Erie Monsters game.

Sideliners meeting scheduled Tuesday

Fairhaven Invitational set for today

The eighth annual Fairhaven Invitional takes place today at Fairhaven School. Four games will be played throughout the day. There will be an award ceremony after each game to honor the participants. The Special Olympic basketball tournament starts at 10 a.m and the last game is set for 4 p.m.

Coach Joyce II to have book signing March 7

Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary boys basketball coach Dru Joyce will launch his book, “Beyond Championships: A Playbook for Winning at Life,” at Lion and Lamb in Eastwood Mall on, March 7 from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

His former player, LeBron James, wrote the foreword. Joyce met and coached LeBron as a 10-year-old, then became his high school coach at SVSM, leading the team to a state and national championship. Joyce was born in East Liverpool.

The book will be available exclusively at Lion and Lamb prior to the March 10 release date.

Penguins have strong showing at HL meet

The Youngstown State swimming and diving team had five top-seven finishes on Friday at the Horizon League Championships at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center. Leading the way was Viktoria Orosz who was second in the 200-yard freestyle with a school-record time of 1:48.78. Orosz had set the mark of 1:50.01 back in November. On Friday night, Orosz staterd out first taking the lead after the first 50 yards, but Oakland’s Nikki Flynn grabbed the advantage during the second 50. Orosz kept pace the last 100 yards, but Flynn won the event with a time of 1:48.32.

Hannah Reynolds had a strong performance in the 100-yard breaststroke with a career-best time of 1:04.71 to place sixth. Reynolds became just the second Penguin in school history to swim under 1:05 in the event. Her previous-best time was 1:06.55. Senior Ashley Dow had a strong swim in the 100-yard backstroke placing seventh with a time of 57.37 seconds. In the three-meter diving, the Penguins took the fifth and seventh spots.

The final day of the Horizon League Championships will feature the 1,650-yard freestyle, 200-yard backstroke, 100-yard freestyle, 200-yard breaststroke, 200-yard butterfly and 400-yard freestyle relay.

Lions re-sign long snapper to deal

ALLEN PARK, Mich.

The Detroit Lions have re-signed long snapper Don Muhlbach to a one-year contract.

Muhlbach has spent the past 11 seasons with the Lions. He was named to the NFC Pro Bowl team following the 2012 season. Last year, he played his 150th game with Detroit. He’s now played 164, which is tied for 13th on the team’s career list.
