Police recovered a handgun from the roof of a garage while chasing a man on foot on the South Side on Thursday evening.
Reports said an officer on patrol in the 200 block of Hilton Avenue about 8:25 p.m. saw a couple in the street arguing. The woman was hanging onto the man’s arm as they walked toward a car, and when the man opened the car door the smell of marijuana came from inside, reports said.
The officer stopped to see if they were all right and asked them for identification. Reports said the man, Antonio Crockett, 29, of Youngstown, kept his right hand inside his coat pocket, and when the officer asked Crockett to approach him with his hands out of his pockets, Crockett began running.
Reports said the officer and a colleague who arrived as backup chased him through the yard of a vacant home at 240 Hilton Ave. Reports said Crockett tried to climb a fence near the garage, and his hand was on top of the garage roof. He then jumped down toward one of the officers chasing him. The officer thought Crockett may have been armed so he shot him with an electronic stun gun, reports said.
On the roof, officers found a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun, reports said. Crockett was arrested on charges of carrying a concealed weapon and obstructing official business and taken to the Mahoning County jail.
The woman who was with him, 22-year-old Joyce Davis of Youngstown, was charged with possession of dangerous drugs after two pills were found in her purse, reports said. She was released at the scene.
